Gagarin Square - future film star

Borough Market and in particular Park Street (early Victorian) is a favorite for film makers. Now they have discovered the wide pavement outside the Menier Chocolate Factory looking East to the Shard. “World recognition!”

The image above is a screen grab of a new British comedy-drama film “Hector and the Search for Happiness” staring Simon Pegg and Rosamund Pike, directed by Peter Chelsom and co-written with Tinker Lindsay and Maria von Heland, based on François Lelord's novel of the same name.

The beginning of another movie “Good People”, a 2013 American thriller action film with James Franco and Kate Hudson, takes place on the 55 Southwark Street – the parking, which is actually the Gagarin Square site, showing the railway arches, the Menier Chocolate Factory and the wall of the existing first floor garden (see the image below).

In addition to this, later this year there will be scenes on television from the successful BBC series “New Tricks” about a team of four, three of whom are retired cops to reinvestigate unsolved crimes. This includes the gorgeous Tamsin Outhwaite who was such a success for the Menier four years ago in Sweet Charity.

“Thank you Tamsin for returning to the Menier to investigate the mystery of our disappearing waiters.”

“Sweet Charity”. Menier Chocolate Factory theatre

We are sure the unusual theatre frontage of the Gagarin theatre will attract art film makers in addition to these crime crews.
